Penny washers are larger diameter washers that offer an extremely secure surface to tighten against by spreading the load with an increased surface area across the material. They are used to prevent pull-through or damage to the product when being secured, and they are a must-have washer when fastening soft materials/timber. Often referred to as repair washers or mudguard washers they are extensively used within the automotive industry on mudguards to prevent the small bolt heads from pulling through the rubber material.

 

What are penny washers used for?

 

• Penny washers are also referred to quite commonly as repair washers due to the common application they are used for. Penny washers are a brilliant solution to preventing damage to soft materials or timber when securing them in position, but unfortunately, penny washers are commonly used in hindsight !!
• The main issue with securing softer materials is the bolt heads and standard washers are often quite narrow in diameter, with the majority of pressure at the point bolt head or washer this forms a weak point in the material and the fastener can damage the material where it makes contact, often ending in the fastener pulling fully through the hole and leaving no security at that point. You are then left with a frayed, damaged, or bigger hole. 
• This is where repair washers get their name, as people research a solution they come across penny washers that have the same inner diameter for the screw or bolt, but an increased outer diameter to give more surface area and cover the damaged section. This washer then provides a much longer-lasting solution.
• The automotive industry is well aware of the benefits of penny washers and refers to them themselves as mudguard washers as they use them to secure mudguards on vehicles due to the rubber material they are manufactured from being a prime candidate for pull-through of the fastener. Penny washers are fitted in retrospect to ensure a reliable, secure mudguard from installation.
